The Ranger of Grewlant by Zeca Teixeira

A little about Grewlant... For many in Frostholm, the northern regions of Allansia, the secret village of Grewlant is nothing but a legend full of mysticism and fantasy. For you, this name can be translated as “home”. Situated inside the mysterious Forest of Night, a scenario of exuberant beauty and exotic fauna, your village originated in the midst of the jungle thousands of years ago. And because of the nature of its origins – the supposed “danger” contained in the forest, Grewlant remains protected. Since your first years of life, your parents told you with pride the story of the unprecedented love between an elf and a mortal that brought Grewlant to existence. Although it has always been a known fact that in the past elves and men beheld a strong and secure alliance in Frostholm, their different values have always prevented the two races to a possible aggregation. Elves have always feared the effects of mortality amongst their society. Their history should be kept, for their longevity was its greatest security. On the other hand, men have never been able to comprehend the rigid ambition to perfection found in the elfish society. To them, this thinking would only result in a state of imprisonment. These and other crucial differences took these two peoples to establish a major rule regarding their relations; the rule that officially and expressly forbid the coexistence between elves and men on the same land, even less in the same clan or family, under penalty of death. Yet the rule did not prevent a young girl called M arren to fall in love with Lihart, a noble elf warrior that fought beside the men from the lands of Griphon in the greatest battle against Zahorn Kobalt. Kobalt is the most powerful demon seen in Titan yet. Since the beginning of times this mighty creature had planned to exterminate the elfish people and to slave the human race. He spent a long time gathering the most bestial evil races on Titan to serve him as his soldiers in order to accomplish his goals. Old tales affirm that after a lifetime battle, Lihart demonstrated his immense courage by fighting Zahorn and, although it seemed impossible, achieved victory. However, right before Lihart mutilated the head of the demon, Zahorn assured that he would be able to come back to life and that he would bring revenge over Lihart and his offspring. The elf burnt the demon’s head and commanded his soldiers to throw the ashes at the waters of Jarlhof Bay, while his body was buried in the Freezeblood M ountains. Unfortunately the eventual celebration ended up shorter than the expected, since Lihart as well found himself in love with M arren as he returned from the war. The couple tried to convince their peoples of how genuine their love was, but with no success, they decided to go against the rule that surrounded them from both sides, running away to the Forest of Night. The incident provoked great rebellion among the elves that saw the happening as a strategy from men to “steal” their main hero and guarantee peace in their lands. Therefore, by no means did elves relate with men again. No longer was it heard of the presence of a man in the archipelago of QartzooLithNen. The young lovers were forced to face a long journey running away from troops of men who intended to deport Lihart back to the elfish islands as a proof of their loyalty. Fortunately they were unable to capture the couple. Despite all the anger around the couple, several men and elves believed in the couple’s love and decided to follow them. M any times the couple counted on the help of different magical beings who believed that Lihart would still play an important role in the future, such as the nymphs that lived in the forest. Lihart and M arren founded Grewlant together with the young elves and men that joined them. Later on the couple also had a son that they called M irnah. There they lived secretly and happily for a long time. But time also proved to be the cause of separation, as well as of a strong love demonstration. Lady M arren grew old and at a very advanced age fell sick with no repairable cure. Lord Lihart stood on her side the entire time of her sickness, and at her very last breath, he did what is only registered in ancient tales; he cut the tip of his own finger as well as Lady M arren’s and shared his blood with her. That sacred ritual can give the power of eternal life to anyone else, but it means certainly death to an elf. Lady M arren felt extreme remorse after being told of her beloved’s extreme attitude. Despite the apathy that would have taken her the next years, she decided to keep her husband’s will and try not to follow him into the afterlife. She is still the sovereign of the village and rules her people with her son, the prince, who is still a teenager. Although it is located in the middle of the jungle, your village shelters a few of the original elves and more than eight hundred semi-elves, who although not immortal like elves, can live way longer than humans. You are proud to have your own costumes and to speak your own language – formed as a mix of the elfish tongue and the dialect from the lands of Griphon. Your architecture is simple, since your cultural values emphasize that conserving the forest around means protection to your people. This fact produces an interesting construction mode along the top of the trees. Your simple houses made out of wood and straw spread throughout the thick trunks and are covered by the fine pendants of colorful leaves and fruits. There is nothing better for an inhabitant of Grewlant than waking up in the morning under the effect of the dappled sunlight crossing the branches from the window. Your people don’t have a very refined lifestyle; you live basically by the fruit that the land produces. This makes philosophy the most common of the activities. However, the arts of battling and hunting have been very well preserved. Following the lineage of your family, you have become a strong and brave archer with aim beyond compare. And archers, and hunters, and warriors you need for it is said by the nymphs as part of their prophecy: “From amongst your people shall be raised the one who will destroy the demon Zahorn at want. At the proper time and by the heir of the primeval Shall be thrown the arrow that will kill the greatest evil.” Your people received this prophecy right after Lihart’s death, and you understood that Zahorn was not completely destroyed. So, with the certainty that your people will still play a role greater than the one your courageous antecessor Lihart did, you keep living, fighting and getting ready for this moment, although still not so aware of what your individual role will be…
